About

The Plenty Project and Sunny Soups

The Plenty Project is designed for people who want to learn how, what and why to cook, through sessions that take in budgeting, nutrition and practical cooking. Cooking workshops focus on cheap, nutritious meals that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and can be tailored to participants’ own needs and what they would like to learn to cook and eat. The project began in February 2017, and since then has been expanded into local primary schools with courses designed around the schools’ varying facilities and curriculum or pupil requirements.

Sunny Soups grew out of the Plenty Project as a way for course participants to stay in touch, continue to learn new cooking skills, and volunteer to reduce local food waste and generate free, nourishing food for the community. Surplus fruit, vegetables and herbs are donated by local shops and community gardens to be turned by volunteers into soups, stewed fruit, purees and more. This is then available for anyone to take, absolutely free, from a freezer in Dunbar’s Bleachingfield Centre.

Thanks go to project funder SCVO, local shops for their support with ingredients, and Zero Waste Dunbar for funding our freezer.
